All About Our All-Natural Lip Balms

We're excited to be back on the blog, and we're kicking things off with a post about our favorite new addition: our all-natural lip balms.

The Journey to the Perfect Balm

When we set out to create our lip balm, we had a few key goals in mind: it had to be good for you, all-natural, sustainable, and fun! We had avoided making balms for a while because we couldn't find non-plastic packaging we loved. Then we discovered a US-based company making outstanding biodegradable push-up tubes. After using them for our solid lotion bars (a future blog post!), we knew they were perfect for lip balms.

Our first attempts were lackluster.  We gathered feedback from friends and family, making adjustments for balms that were too sticky, too hard, or just not effective enough for chapped lips.  We also found that our first set of cardboard tubes - in the normal 0.15 oz size that you often see as plastic tubes - were just too small. You simply couldn’t “push up” without using a pencil.

What Makes Our Balm So Special?

Our lip balms are made with a carefully selected blend of plant-based ingredients, each chosen for a specific purpose.

• Colorado Beeswax: This key ingredient gives our balm a firm texture, so it won't melt in your pocket or purse. It also forms a protective barrier that seals in moisture and shields your lips from external factors like wind, sun, and cold. As a natural emollient, beeswax helps soften and smooth your lips for lasting comfort.
• Kokum Butter: Sourced from the fruit kernels of the Garcinia indica tree, this firm vegetable oil works with the beeswax to create a solid base. It has a mild scent that won't interfere with our flavors and creates a protective, moisture-locking layer. Rich in antioxidants, Kokum Butter helps shield against environmental stressors and offers long-lasting hydration for dry lips. With its high stearic acid content, Kokum Butter also contributes to the balm's stable shelf life.
• Apricot Kernel Oil: This oil soaks in quickly, providing instant moisture without a greasy feel. Its rich fatty acids deliver intense hydration, while vitamins A and E offer antioxidant benefits, protecting your skin.
• Olive Oil: We all love olive oil for its intensely moisturizing and gentle properties. The antioxidants and vitamins (more A and E!) help soothe irritated and chapped lips. It could feel a bit greasy on its own, but that’s why we pair it with the other ingredients to give just the right feel.
• Castor Oil: Like our other ingredients, castor oil helps moisturize, protect, and soothe lips. We especially love it for the gentle, glossy shine it adds to our balms.

Herbal Infusion: Finally, each of our balms is infused with a trio of powerful herbal extracts chosen for their skin-loving properties. We use Calendula, the beloved flower that inspired our company, along with Echinacea and Lemon Balm. These three herbal allies are known for their ability to soothe irritated skin, promote healing, and even offer minor relief from cold sores.

The Flavors

We are always experimenting, but the three current top-sellers are: Coconut, Creamsicle, and Basil-Mint. The coconut is an all-natural flavor oil, and contains some vanilla. Creamsicle also has vanilla, combined with benzoin and blood orange essential oils. The Basil-Mint is a combination of peppermint, spearmint, and basil essential oils.
